Dear County Executive Thomas Suozzi,

I am writing this letter with genuine concern for both community members and commuters alike.  I live in Island Park, a small south shore community within Nassau County.  Austin Boulevard is approximately 2.2 miles and runs the length of my town.  This road is very dangerous. According to statistics there is a car accident every 2.5 days on Austin Boulevard.

The Island Park Civic Association and community members have recently met with Legislators Toback and Ford, Assemblyman Weisenberg, and Senior Deputy Commissioner Stefanowicz from the Nassau County Department of Public Works requesting a study of Austin Boulevard.  In conjunction to this study we need law enforcement.  Island Park is allotted one police car that is pulled out of town for emergencies in surrounding neighborhoods, leaving us without police protection.  Many laws concerning Austin Boulevard are not enforced.  Cars park on the sidewalk the entire stretch of the road, making it very difficult for pedestrians and children attending school to cross Austin Boulevard safely.  When 911 is called there is no response and /or summons given out.  The 40 mph speed limit is not enforced which supports why there are accidents so frequently.

Safety is a basic human need.  It is no different then food, shelter and air.  It is our responsibility to provide a safe environment for our family members and neighbors.  We are looking to you, our County Executive to help provide us with a safe environment.  We need more man power to enforce the law.  Basic traffic and safety laws are ignored.  We ask that you support us in our endeavor to achieve a safer environment for our community members and commuters alike as we will continue to support you.

Sincerely,
